"Leatrice Brewer, Woman Who Drowned Her Three Children, Gives Birth to Her Fourth"

It all began when Long Island mom, Leatrice Brewer called the Nassau County Police Department claiming that she murdered her three children. The police investigation that took place on February 24, 2008 was not an easy one to be apart of. The team found the woman's three children drowned in the bathtub of their New Cassel home in New York. The names of the children were Jewell Ward, 6, Michael Demesyeux, 5, and Innocent Demesyeux, 1.
Now this is where the news begins to come into place. According to the Mid- Hudson Forensic Psychiatric Center in New Hampton, where she has been incarcerated since 2008, thirty-three year old Leatrice Brewer has been impregnated, prepared for her fourth child. The center has refused to comment or answer any questions the reporters might have due to privacy laws. As of now it is unclear who the father of this baby is, or how the woman got pregnant in a closed off and secure facility.
In 2008, Brewer was found not guilty due to mental illnesses and was admitted to the center instead of serving time in prison. When the father of her deceased children was questioned about her pregnancy he responded, "This person's supposedly in a secure facility and she gets pregnant. This is the woman who had no idea what she was doing when she murdered our children." Psychiatrists who evaluated Brewer said she had a major depressive disorder and confirmed that she most likely killed her children to save them from deadly effects of the voodoo. According to Leatrice Brewer, she saved her children's lives. It is safe to say that the rest of the world, does not exactly have the same perspective as Brewer.
I do not think Leatrice Brewer should have had a fourth child after what happened to her other three children. Killing her children simply because they had a “curse” is ridiculous. She is definitely crazy if she thinks she saved her kid’s lives. I hope the fourth child is put into safer hands. This blog was terrific.
ReplyDeleteLeatrice Brewer should have been put in prison for murdering her very young children. She should not have been let off so easily. On top of that, how did she get pregnant in a center like that. In my opinion the doctor should have aborted the fourth child when they found out Leatrice is pregnant or the child should be taken away from her after birth.Good job on the blog!
ReplyDeleteLeatrice Brewer clearly has a mental illness and hearing that she is pregnant with a forth child is frightening. The child will obviously be taken away from her due to her history and illness. There is definitely missing information regarding how she was impregnated while in the center and investigators should try to reveal the truth. Rita did a terrific job explaining not only the initial case but also the events following it.
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to figure out how she could have possibly gotten pregnant a fourth time under such strict surveillance. She should not mother this child, that is out of the question. I wish Rita was more specific about Leatrice Brewer's mental illness; it's a morose yet fascinating story. It's sadistically ironic how one of her children's names was "Innocent". ReplyDeleteI am delighted to hear this. Mental health facilities are declining in not only quantity but also quality. Problems with mental institutions do not stop at just pregnancies of the insane. One of the Boston Bombers and the Sandy Hook shooter could have all possibly not committed these heinous crimes if the medical attention they received was of decent quality and there was follow through. God, the Universe, Mother Nature (call it anything) all work in mysterious ways. When people expect and hope for good and hear nothing but bad, it is hard to trust the world. Interesting article, and I congratulate the author on making the reader's day end on a bad note.
ReplyDeleteThis news is really depressing because a mother who killed her three children and made a mental excuse stating that the children were under a curse is having her fourth child. If this new child is not put into safer hands people should not be surprised if the mother kills her child once more. The mystery in this news is how the woman keeps getting pregnant even though she is in a closed facility. Nice blog post Rita!

ReplyDeleteAfter reading an article as mind boggling as this, one must truly wonder, “What is the world coming too?” A mother is obviously ridiculously insane if she feels the need to murder her own flesh and blood. No one in their right mind should allow this inconsiderate woman the responsibility of bearing another child. Excellent thought-provoking topic choice, Rita!
ReplyDeleteA mother is the role model of her children. One must be insane to drown her own young children in their bathtub. Children need love and compassion from their parents in order to grow healthy and be happy. It is horrifying to read this article, especially now that the mother is going to have her forth child after murdering her three children. Great topic Rita! It was extremely interesting to read about.
ReplyDeleteAllowing a woman like this should not be acceptable to mother children, taking away the chance for the kids to have a possible future. It is still unclear the intentions of this woman considering the fact that she believed to have "saved" her children's lives. The outcome of this investigation will be interesting, interesting indeed...
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of a mother - instead of the obvious birthing of her children - is to be a positive influence, unconditional caretaker, and protector. One can not simply murder their first three children with a right mind. It is not an occurrence one sees every day. This only means Leatrice Brewer's pregnancy with her fourth child is a disaster waiting to happen. Good job Rita!
ReplyDeleteThis is a devastating story that will never be clearly understood unless one takes a step into the mind of Leatrice Brewer. Of course someone like Brewer, who is not in the healthiest state of mind can commit horrible actions, such as this one, however her claimed mental illness is what excuses them all. Then again taking the lives of such young and innocent children is one act that will be viewed as the most twisted and inhumane thing somebody can commit in the eyes of society. Nonetheless, we must always consider both perspectives of a case in order to truly understand why these type of things occur.
ReplyDeleteThe complexity of the human mind is endless. It is a scary thought to acknowledge how deep, dark, and twisted it can be. Unfortunately, it got the best of her. This problem did not only destroy her life, but end her children's as well. It will be interesting to find out how the fourth child will grow up. Hopefully, he or she will be raised well and have a bright future. Well done Rita!
