In November of 2012, seventy-nine year old Marcel H. from Liege, Beligium passed away from an asthma attack, according to Carters News Agency. His wife was incredibly upset after her husband's death and failed to report the death to the authorities, or anyone else for that matter. One may ask, what is special about this news, but here is where it gets a bit bizarre. After avoiding the death report, the woman continuously slept next to her husband's decaying body for about a year now. Unfortunately for the woman, Belgian authorities discovered the behavior and took actions against it on the nineteenth of November, 2013.
The authorities were led to the apartment because the landlord had been complaining that the residents had not been paying the rent since last Novemeber, after the man's death. The neighbors had reported a bad smell countless amount of times, not knowing that the smell might have been a mummified corpse.
Although this entire scenario may seem unbelievable and rare, this case was not the first of it's kind. A year ago, a woman from Michigan was found sleeping with her boyfriend's decaying body, months after his death. She had been cashing in his Social Security checks after his death, howver refused to give the body away in fear of being left all alone.
Death is undeniably one of the most difficult parts of life to overcome, but maybe this is going a bit too far.

This story is definitely creepy and on a topic not often discussed or heard about in the news. Understanding that the death of their loved ones was hard on these women, it is a bit extreme to keep their decaying bodies. One should learn to move on after a death and continue to live their lives. Acceptance of someone's death is a major part in moving forward and a decaying body constantly there does not help the process. It is not only depressing but also unsanitary. Extremely fascinating topic!
ReplyDeleteRita's article is certainly unheard of. Letting go of people one loves is definitely hard, but it is on another level to keep those demised bodies in the same house. It is not healthy for the women to keep her husband's body in her house, because it will always be a reminder and a burden of his death. Very interesting topic Rita!
ReplyDeleteI understand that losing someone who has been loved by people is hard but this is life and that is how life ends. It happens in everyone's families but I have not yet heard of anything weirder. Keeping a dead body in a house is weird enough but sleeping next to is just not describable. I cannot even try imagining what kind of person would do that. Not reporting the death of a person and living off of their social security checks is just cruel. How can one do that to a person. Rita this news blog was creepy.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, death is inevitable. Some people find it insanely hard to grasp the idea of death. In order to safely recover, one should not commence in such bizarre acts of grievance, but slowly recuperate from terrible losses. Rita’s blog mentions the unhealthiest, not to mention most unsanitary, way to grieve a loved one’s death. Sometimes we must hear peculiar news, such as this article, in order to really value the life that has been given to us. Awesome job, Rita!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard such a creepy unusual situation before. What I have heard though is one situation similar to this for their own benefit such as using the deceased body to utilize the carpool lane, but the Belgian widow kept him to not be left alone. It is truly amazing what the burden of loneliness has in the psychological aspect around the world.
